On April 27, 2024, an internet news site called odatv.com published a news (or rather, more precisely, a comment in a news appearance) titled “Cold War propaganda from the Karar newspaper: Red Army concert was cancelled… What does it have to do with the Circassian Exile” with an inscription “source: news center”. Let’s point out right away that it is odatv.com actually who is the one making Cold War propaganda. Apparently, the concerts of the Red Army Choir in some towns of Turkey on May 18 (the 80th anniversary of the Crimean Tatar Sürgün) and May 21 (the 160th anniversary of Circassian tsitsekun), the two symbolic days of the expansionist and genocidal Russo-Soviet atrocities, were met with a rapid growth of opposition led by the Karar newspaper and in which representatives of the relevant peoples’ associations and foundations, participated in full. Fearing outrage, the organizer’s tactical withdrawal and cancellation of these two dates upset as it seems somebodies. The unsigned text they published in their site was obviously written by a Russian “expert”, and it fell on them to translate it into Turkish and publish unashamedly and regardlessly. This write-up is almost the 2024 version of the TASS statement dated July 23, 1987, full of slanders against the Crimean Tatars, which the Soviet regime hastily published in response to the demonstrations in Moscow’s Red Square in July 1987, where thousands of Crimean Tatars, women and children from places of exile, caused to tremble the windows of the Kremlin with their slogans Homeland or Death”. But their statements could not prevent the Crimean Tatars from overcoming all barriers and rushing into Crimea.

In this text published by odatv.com, the main target is the Crimean Tatars, who have not complied to the occupying Putin regime for 10 years. With the stroke of a pen, they blamed the Circassian genocide on Tsarist Russia and got away with it. Oh, what a wonderful world! However, even when one superposes and compares the map of the Tsarist time before its collapse and the map of the first years of the institution of the Soviet, one easily sees the continuity. Is there anyone who does not know that their beloved Putin regime claims the legacy of the Soviet regime? It must not have been that easy to put the Turkish people to sleep with the blood and horror-invoking tunes of the Red Army Choir, true to its name, who consoled the Turkish people with the song “Shikidim” before “Katyusha” in order to make them forget Stalin’s territorial demands from Turkey towards the end of the Second World War.

Don’t they know that the Soviet regime was forced to abolish the so-called crime of treason, losing its composure due to the extraordinary struggle of the deported Crimean Tatars through a mass mobilization to remove the crime of treason and to remove the legal obstacles for their return to their homeland, and that with the decree (ukaz) of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR dated September 5, 1967, completely rehabilitated the Crimean Tatars? Moreover, aren’t they aware, even at this last moment of the first quarter of the XXIst century, that the collective indictment and punishment of a people had a place only in prehistoric jurisprudence? We can best understand that the deportation of Crimean Tatars has nothing to do with any betrayal, from the deportation of peoples such as Chechens and Meskhetian Turks, whose realms did not see any enemy soldiers. They pretend to not know the fact that Stalin, who claimed Kars and Ardahan, cleared the border of Turkish and Muslim people who could hinder him in a war he planned against Turkey.
Besides, the very homelands of these deported peoples were essentially already under the occupation of Soviet Russia. After the genuine Russian Revolution with real mass participation, known as the February Revolution of 1917, the countries of all the people living under Tsarist rule, from Ukraine to Azerbaijan, who declared their national independence, were occupied by the evil Soviet Red Army.
And what’s more, the so-called “expert”, whose article was shamelessly published by the site, posed as if he were revealing a scientific truth by giving some fabricated figures and propaganda references based on partisan Soviet archives. He resorts to the impudence of minimizing the incident by downplaying the numbers of exiles. Our only metaphorical curse to this inhumane copywriter would be “live and see”. Then again, it is written in such a way that it is as if those who were exiled traveled not in animal wagons, but comfortably in wagon-lits and were settled in well-developed settlements prepared and furnished for them in places of exile. We know that the Crimean Tatars, from the first date they began to breathe in their places of exile, counted their real dead one by one through collective action and determined the true human dimension of the deportation. Unfortunately, the book The Numbers Bear Witness, compiled by Zera Bekirova on this subject, has not yet been translated into Turkish. Of course, in order to understand to some extent why the deportation is called genocide, it is necessary to take into account its lethal effect on the population and its evolution, as well as its lethal effect on the field of culture and civilization. The aim of this deportation was to erase the existence of the Crimean Tatars not only from the world but also from history.
Today, after the insidious invasion in 2014, the occupying Russian regime continues its prohibitive attitude towards the Crimean Tatars commemorating the victims of deportation in Crimea, which they tried to appease by promising them the freedoms they did not have during the Ukrainian period. However, until the 2014 invasion, the deportation could be freely cursed at a public meeting in the capital Akmescit (Simferopol), where corteges from every district converged as their last stop every May 18. Nowadays, Crimean Tatars cannot even sit in peace in their homes, let alone commemorate May 18, that fateful Black Day, and their pain. They are tested with constant searches, raids, trials, fines, and convictions.
Our blood runs cold, and we are speechless in the face of this disgusting slander. If they had listened to and read the stories of Crimean and Meskhetian Turk victims of deportation, whose memoirs are published on http://www.surgun.org, would they still dare to publish such an article? Another proof that people must lose one’s human feeling in order to justify genocide, exile, and massacre. Well, of course, with the material and moral support of such minds, the successor of the Red Army continues its reckless actions in Aleppo, Bucha, Irpin, and Mariupol. But the Putin regime has dragged Russia and Russian people to such a point for years that one nearly presumes there is no place in the world for anyone other than Russians, there is no righteous person in the world other than them. The arrogance of Russia, yesterday’s “poor superpower” and “Upper Volta with rockets”, where you come face to face with sheer misery when you move a little away from its narrow center, is astonishing. In 2014, when the Ukrainians finally threw the Russians off their backs, the first thing Russia did was to capture the historical Turkish-Tatar homeland of Crimea with an irregular warfare operation under the cries of “Crimea Is Ours” and to land troops rashly in the Donbas region of Ukraine.
Today, by exposing Russia’s empty bluffs, Ukrainians are dying to protect us from a scourge that imposes its ideology of changing the world through war and genocide. Let’s give them a real support and have a small share in the liberation of Crimea.
